This article attempts to identify, describe, and explain the main historically shaped social factors that
have influenced the post-communist transition in Bulgaria. Three groups of interrelated factors are of particular
interest: the specific features of the former totalitarian regime, Bulgaria’s social structure, and the cultural
characteristics of Bulgarian society
